2012 Nissan Titan Reviewed

The 2012 Nissan Titan may not sell by the tens of thousands like segment-leading trucks from Ford, Chevrolet and GMC, but those buyers who opt for the powerful Japanese full-size pickup will be rewarded with excellent 2012-Nissan-Titan-Philadelphiapower and capability.

The Titan’s slab-sided styling looks sufficiently fierce and aggressive, while the interior has improved by leaps and bounds in more-recent model years.

The lone engine choice for 2012 is a 5.6-liter Endurance V8 with 317 horsepower and an outstanding 385 foot-pounds of torque. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and either rear-wheel drive or 4×4 all-wheel drive with a towing and hauling low-range mode, this engine provides plenty of capability if below-average fuel efficiency for the segment.

The EPA rates 4×2 models at 13 city/18 highway mpg, while 4×4 Titan trucks see 12 city/17 highway mpg. When properly equipped, the Titan can tow up to 9,500 pounds, about average for the class. Payload measures up to 2,153 pounds in the Titan’s most-durable configuration.

Nissan offers the Titan in regular cab, King Cab and Crew Cab configurations, the latter providing plenty of space for the whole work crew with entry and exit made easier by four full-size doors.

A 71.9-inch bed is made more useful still by a factory-applied spray-on bed liner and the brand’s Utili-Track bed channel system.

Seating for up to six passengers is available with the optional 40/20/40 split-folding front bench seat, while two front buckets are standard.

Interior infotainment connectivity cannot match the Ford F-150’s SYNC with MyFord Touch system or RAM’s new UConnect WiFi hotspot, but available navigation and Bluetooth connectivity are great on or off the job.

An available eight-speaker Rockford-Fosgate premium audio system pumps out 350 watts of power and produces clear, bass-heavy music.

Modern safety features include electronic traction and stability control systems, plus a panic braking system that preps the brakes for maximum stopping power when a collision is imminent.

The Titan features six airbags, including side-curtain airbags for both seating rows.

For those who dare to be different than the typical Ford buyer, the 2012 Titan offers impressive work truck capability and plenty of driving fun. Try the Pro-X trim for the best off-road prowess in the class.
